The Embassy of Hungary in Ottawa is the embassy of Hungary to Canada. It is located in the historic Birkett Castle at 306 Metcalfe Street in the Centretown neighbourhood of Ottawa, with the main entrance via the adjacent embassy annex at 299 Waverley Street. Hungary also maintains Honorary Consulates in Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. ==History==
Birkett Castle was built in 1896 by Mr. Thomas Birkett, who served as Mayor of Ottawa, and later as a Member of Parliament. The building, 306 Metcalfe Street, which was built in the Baronial Gothic style, features towers, a crenellated roofline, wood panelling, a variety of fine ornaments, and stained glass windows.
The building was the Dominion Headquarters for the Boy Scouts Association in 1939.〔(of Gilwell, Robert, Baron. Scouting for Boys; a Handbook for Instruction in Good Citizenship through Woodcraft. Canadian Edition. Ottawa: Boy Scouts Association, 1939. page 14. )〕
The urban “castle” was designated as a heritage property in 1980.
It was acquired by the Government of Hungary in 1994 and is now an attractive embassy that also serves as the Official Residence to the Ambassador. Inside the building, Hungarian sculptures, statues, and Herend china are exhibited. The building was included amongst other architecturally interesting and historically significant buildings in Doors Open Ottawa, held June 2 and 3, 2012.〔http://ottawa.ca/doorsopen Doors Open Ottawa〕
